The municipality of Sesimbra is located in the Setubal Peninsula, about 30 kilometers from Lisbon and Setubal, which is about half an hour's drive from each city. Access from Lisbon is via the A2 until the Fogueteiro exit and then the EN378. From Setubal, access is by the EN10 to Azeitão, and then the EN379.
The territory is divided into the parishes of Santiago, Castelo and Quinta do Conde. The first corresponds to the town of Sesimbra, a fishing and bathing center, which is the county seat and main tourist center, concentrating several emblematic buildings, such as the Santiago Fortress, the Chapel of Espírito Santo dos Mareantes and Medieval Hospital, and the Mother Church.
The parish of Castelo corresponds to the rural area, very much linked to agriculture. On the south coast of this parish, which extends from Sesimbra Bay to Cape Espichel, are some of the most beautiful beaches of the county, with emphasis on the Ribeiro do Cavalo, known worldwide. The western coast extends to the Albufeira Lagoon, with Meco Beach in between.
To the north is the parish of Quinta do Conde, the youngest of the three, more urban in nature. In this parish is located the golf course of Quinta do Peru, one of the best known of the region, which receives practitioners from around the world, throughout the year.
Sesimbra has a unique geographic setting, with an Atlantic coast of over 40 kilometers, which extends from the Albufeira Lagoon to the Arrábida Mountains. On the west coast are the extensive sands of Meco and, to the south, the imposing cliffs of Cape Espichel, and small sheltered coves, among which stands Ribeiro de Cavalo, considered one of the most beautiful beaches in Portugal.

The town of Sesimbra overlooks the bay, with its old houses. To the west, the landscape is dominated by the Porto de Abrigo (port), where the bustle and traditions of fishing intersect with tourist activities such as diving, sailing and canoeing.
The bay is surrounded by two fine sand beaches: California and Ouro. In the center of the sandy beach stands the imposing and beautiful Santiago Fortress, and to the east are the cliffs of Serra do Risco, Arrábida, which shape the landscape.
According to the 2011 Census, the resident population of the municipality of Sesimbra, in that year, was 48,506 inhabitants, mostly belonging to the parish of Quinta do Conde (52.7 percent), followed in population size by the parish of Castelo, with 37.4 percent, and finally the parish of Santiago, with 9.9 percent of the population.
In 10 years the population of Sesimbra grew 30.1 percent, but this growth was very uneven: it decreased 16 percent in the parish of Santiago and had an extraordinary growth of 62.1 percent in the parish of Quinta do Conde.
In 2011 there were 31,836 dwellings in Sesimbra (not considering collective dwellings, such as nursing homes, etc.). Although most of the population is located in Quinta do Conde, it is the parish of Castelo that has more dwellings, due to the fact that there are many second homes: in this parish they represent 38.2 percent of the total. But it is the parish of Santiago that has more second homes: 56.1 percent.
